The FabrIc WoRks

The polished look of Vuitton’s pre-fall collection originated with design director Julie de Libran’s recent trip to Venice to view “Louise Bourgeois: The Fabric Works” at the Magazzino del Sale. Bourgeois’s colors—blues inspired by workers’ overalls, reds ranging from burgundy to salmon—appeared here in de Libran’s tweeds, stripes, and color-blocked sweaters and skirts. Silhouettes were inspired by the Art Deco twenties and thirties. Sequined flapper-esque dresses, below-the-knee skirts, and Marlene Dietrich power suits made for a smart, glam, feminist look without a lot of femininity attached.
