The pre-war fashion design had been entirely dominated by women like Chanel, Lanvin, Schiaparelli, Vionnet. After the war it fell into the hands of men – Balenciaga, Dior. The success of Christian Dior in the early fifties was seemingly a confirmation of the fact that there was no way back for Chanel after the long absence.
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (1883-1971) was born in Saumur, Southern France. She began by designing hats, first in Paris in 1908, and later in Deauville. Her fashion boutiques (one in Paris and one in Deauville) opened simultaneously in 1914. She opened an haute couture salon in Biarritz in 1916, and in 1920 moved to Paris in the present quarters on rue Cambon. Ready-to-wear fashions were not introduced until 1978, after Coco's death. Cristobal Balenciaga, patriarch of the House of Balenciaga was born in Guetaria, San Sebastian, Spain on January 21, 1895. He studied needlework and dressmaking with is mother until 1910. It was in 1915 when he established his tailoring business under the sponsorship of Marquesa de Casa Torres.He rose to international fame after World War II, wherein he became part of the triad who dressed the world's most beautiful woman with the launch of the New Look by Christian Dior.Balenciaga is a master of illusion, envisioning the garment as a three-dimensional form. Is also very well known for creating avant-garde structural pieces, straddling the edge of fashion and forecasting the future of women's ready-to-wear fashion.
Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent (born August 1, 1936 in Oran, Algeria - died June 1, 2008)died on June 1, 2008 from the effects of brain cancer, at his residence in Paris. Is a French fashion designer, considered among the greatest of the 20th century. In 1985, in her book, "Couture: Oran, Algeria ", Caroline Rennolds Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the cuture's rise from its Sixties ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable".
The most influential fashion designer of the late 1940s and 1950s, CHRISTIAN DIOR (1905 to 1957) dominated fashion after World war II with the hourglass silhouette of his voluptuous New Look.
